Chantal Joffe RA at Jerwood Gallery

Published 3 February 2015

We speak to painter Chantal Joffe RA in her new exhibition at Jerwood Gallery in Hastings.

  • Elected an Academician in 2013, painter Chantal Joffe is renowned for her expressive, figurative paintings, which often feature women and children as their subjects.

Although she lives and works in London, Joffe has family connections to Hastings and spends a lot of time there. This exhibition, which has been co-curated by artist Rose Wylie, has a seaside theme - many of the figures are shown framed by the sea, or on the promenade. Working from photographs and also drawing from life, Joffe has painted “mostly family and a few friends”, she explains.

In the video below, Chantal Joffe talks about the painting process, her influences, and what it’s like to make figurative art on a large scale.
