In conversation with Frank Bowling RA

Published 28 October 2014

Royal Academician Frank Bowling discusses his working practices, his desire to make “pure painting” and the changing reactions to his work throughout his lifetime.

  • As a major solo exhibition of Frank Bowling’s work opens at the Spritmuseum, Stockholm, the artist discusses his life and work; from London to New York and from the early adoption of experimental materials such as foam and plastic to the influence of traditional British artists such as Constable, Gainsborough and Turner.

Bowling is joined by Mel Gooding, art critic and author of the Royal Academy’s monograph on Frank Bowling, and Courtney J. Martin, Assistant Professor of History of Art & Architecture at Brown University and specialist in 20th Century British Art.
